‘26th, got up at 5am to lay new line of 6,000 yards for the new base. Boche, gas shelling about 200 yards away. In the afternoon Boche came over again and set fire to the French balloons, the observers (spotters) escaping by parachute. In the evening went by car and collected in cable.

‘27th, in the afternoon found that about half mile of 9th Corps line missing. Later heard from Captain that Boche was running away.

‘28th went to 9 Corps with messages and heard officially that action had ceased in the area and we started to reel in lines 1, 2, & 3.

‘29th up at 5.30am and finished reeling in lines 1, 2, 3, and OP line.

‘30th, had a lay in until 8am, then reeled in lines 4, 5, and 6 finishing about noon.

‘On 31st went by lorry through Corbie to nearby village to collect ration returning around 5pm.

‘On 1 September stay in camp and helped adjust German Exchange.

‘On 2nd, went to find nearest hospital and passed through the place where two chaps were killed where lines had been blown to pieces.

‘3rd, up at 6.30am had breakfast and were on our way by 8.30am. Laid line for the signal HQ Exchange, on arrival gas shell dropped about 200 yards away.

‘4th, in the morning laid 5 & 6 lines, afternoon laid part of 3 & 4.

‘5th, finished 3 & 4 returning at 6.30pm.

‘6th, reeled in 5 & 6.

‘7th, Up at 6am and reeled in 3 & 4 lines.

‘10th went out scrounging for cable, reeled in 2 miles of cables, lines 5, 3, and 8.

‘11th Went out in chateau grounds and picked blackberries and stewed them for tea and supper with milk pudding and custard.

‘12th Had pass with Chapman for Corbie went down by lorry and had hot shower bath. Left Corbie 5.30pm and saw part of captured guns at Longeau returning to camp 7.30pm and warned for First Army.

‘13th on the morning picked some blackberries and stewed them for tea with custard, afterwards made some pancakes. In the evening went to Villa’s Carbonel [Villers Carbonnel] with a dispatch and at about 10pm saw Boche plane in searchlights and after a lot of firing by AA it was brought down in flames. It was like a firework display.

‘14th, In the morning went on an hour’s route march by Ablaincourt 9.30am till 10.30am. Afternoon had a swim in the Somme at Brie, afterwards picked some blackberries.’
